We are about to "Access Asia" through Language and Literature.

What are your hopes and expectations for this unit of study?

Give me a clue as to your "mental set". How do you feel to try to learn about India? Do you think we will manage to reach across to another culture?

Please offer your ideas of how we can plan for successful learning.

I would really like to taste some indian food! I think that we could write to our sponsor child and find out about religion and daily life for Indians. We could read a fiction book about Indians and find out about other stuff like geography and places to visit. This is going to be very interesting!

[This message has been edited by emstarr (edited 04 October 2001).]

Thanks for all those ideas, Emstarr. To get you started, you might like to review these pages:

Have fun!

I would like to learn about their education, their lifestyle, their housing and their climates. I am eager to learn about India. I think it is a really good topic to learn.

Also perhaps we could learn some of their language and perhaps taste some of their food.

I think it will be an interesting unit, I have done India in primary school and enjoyed it. It would be good to learn about a different culture and I agree with emstarr about some Indian food tasting!

I agree with 8V2. I would love to learn some word and love to try some Indian food. I would like to learn about the animals and read some books and video on India. Even maybe making a sari would be real good!

Saris are explained here - enjoy!

I would like to find out more about ancient India, for e.g, how many different religions were there back then and has their religion been affected by the western religion. Does it differ?. Does anyone know what the men wore in ancient times? There isnt much in books. I think they wor robes and baggy pants but i'm not sure, please fill me in!

OK, FOMM, go here to learn what you asked about - if that's not enough, try scanning down the links on this page.

  • HF: I would like to find out about the history of India because I don't know much, I don't really know about the current events in India so they would be nice to know too. I would also like to know why they find animals like tigers and elephants sacred!

  • zoeyp1 : I would like to know more about their culture, like what they do everyday.
    Thankyou very much.
    From Hannah Parker.

  • FridayOnMyMind : What is the average size of families living together in India? I am assuming that they are larger than the average of Australia which is 2, and the american average, which is 1.5!?!?!?!?

A few years ago India's population reached
1000000(I think)or another significant number. What is the population now? How does the country deal economicly with this number of people? Write back if you know anything about India's population.

Indian culture I think is very interesting!
even though they have their bad bits! like all races do. They have some beautiful buildings such as the Taj Mahal. They also have a lovely country with most of the famous animals like the elephant and tigers and the like.
